A Pocket-Sized Technical Camera

ARCA-SWISS Pico · compact technical camera

Pico is the compact technical camera Arca-Swiss unveiled in late 2023 and launched in 2024. Its positioning is clear: a lightweight movements system built for mirrorless cameras and digital backs. It is not an adapter or a tripod accessory, but a complete technical camera — it simply packs the full movement repertoire of a traditional large-format monorail into a body of about 950g.

Unlike Arca-Swiss's traditional F / M monorail cameras, Pico has no film-holder option and does not share parts with the F / M lines. It is a digital-only standalone line, aimed at photographers who already own high-quality large-format lenses (Rodenstock / Schneider) or a Phase One digital back, but want a lighter, simpler system.

Design Philosophy: Shift at the Rear, Tilt at the Front

At the heart of Pico is a patented structure: a rigid L-frame that slides inside a large, stationary front standard. This layout resolves the tension between “movement” and “rigidity” elegantly — most movements happen at the rear, while the front standard stays solid.

Shift at the rear, perspective unchanged — Pico's horizontal and vertical shift (±20mm each) both happen at the rear standard. Perspective doesn't change as you shift, a decisive advantage for stitching: no parallax between frames, so panoramas merge seamlessly.

Tilt / swing at the front (Orbix®) — the front standard handles tilt / swing (±10° each) using Arca-Swiss's signature Orbix® self-locking geared micrometric tilt (1° detents) to control the plane of focus (Scheimpflug), bringing a slanted plane (floor, tabletop, building façade) fully into focus.

Micro-geared, self-locking, with detents — shift every ~3mm and tilt / swing every 1° have detents; the gears are self-locking, so a setting won't drift when you let go, making precise repeats and re-centering easy.

Rigidity over modularity — compared with the more versatile F-Universalis (which converts to 4×5 / DSLR), Pico deliberately gives up modularity and film capability in exchange for greater rigidity and front-to-rear parallelism for high-resolution digital.

Traditional technical cameras add — convert to any format, mount any back. Pico subtracts — digital only — and turns the saved bulk and complexity into rigidity and precision.

TS-E), Mamiya 645, Hasselblad V and Pentax 645 lenses.

Workflow: From Mounting to Stitching

ARCA 24mm f3.5 / 50mm f2.8 movement lenses

Pico shoots like a large-format technical camera, only lighter and faster. A typical flow looks like this:

STEP 1 · Mount body / back
Use the single-lever quick-change to mount a mirrorless body, or a Phase One IQ / Hasselblad V back, to the rear standard; the back adapter rotates to switch portrait / landscape.
STEP 2 · Mount the lens
Mount the ARCA 24 / 50mm directly on the front B-mount, or fit Rodenstock / Schneider / R-mount / Canon lenses via an adapter plate. With a Canon TS-E, zero out the lens's own shift and let Pico's rear standard do all the shifting.
STEP 3 · Set the focus plane
First use front tilt / swing (±10°) per Scheimpflug to lay the plane of focus onto the slanted subject (floor, tabletop, façade) so the whole plane snaps into focus — rather than stopping down to brute-force depth of field.
STEP 4 · Correct perspective / shift
Use ±20mm of vertical / horizontal rear shift to straighten converging building lines or dodge head-on reflections. Because the shift is at the rear, perspective stays unchanged.
STEP 5 · Stitch
For a bigger frame or more resolution, shoot separate frames shifting / rising along the rear movement, then stitch in post — rear shift doesn't change perspective, so the seams are nearly invisible.

Positioning & Buying

Who Pico suits — seasoned photographers who already own high-quality large-format lenses or a Phase One / Hasselblad back, shoot mainly architecture, interiors, product and landscape (and stitching), and don't want to lug a heavy monorail.

Pico or F-Universalis? — if you still need film (4×5 holders), cross-compatibility with F / M parts, or more convertibility, choose F-Universalis; if you're digital-only and put rigidity and front-to-rear precision first while wanting to travel light, choose Pico.

Using Pico with Optaxis

Pico's movements pair naturally with Optaxis — plan before you shoot:

Scheimpflug tilt calculation — enter the shooting distance and front tilt angle to preview where the focus plane lands, and judge whether ±10° is enough to flatten the slope.

Rear-shift coverage check — based on your lens's image circle, verify that ±20mm of rear shift stays inside the circle without darkening the corners, for more reliable stitching.

Bellows-factor compensation — at long focal lengths or close focus, with large bellows extension, Optaxis computes the light loss and helps you correct exposure.
